우리투데이 이동현 기자 |  전라남도는 10월 8일 영산강 정원 일원에서 남도 정원의 우수성을 알리고 신진 정원 작가를 육성하기 위한 ‘제6회 전라남도 정원페스티벌’을 개막했다고 밝혔다.
개막식에는 김영록 전남도지사, 신정훈 국회의원, 윤병태 나주시장, 최명수·이재태 전남도의원, 이재남 나주시의회의장, 한동길 국립정원문화원장, 도민, 관광객 등 5천여 명이 함께했다.
‘영산강, 정원이 되다’라는 주제로 열리는 페스티벌은 오는 29일까지 22일간 진행된다.
대표정원 1개소, 작가정원 4개소, 동행정원 8개소, 시민정원 20개소 등 33개의 정원이 조성됐으며, 전남의 젖줄 영산강의 문화와 함께 가을녘 남도정원의 아름다운 정취를 만끽할 수 있다. 특히 정원마다 예술적·철학적 가치를 뽐내며 관람객들에게 특별한 경험을 선사할 것으로 기대된다.
대표정원은 선유도공원, 여의도샛강생태공원 등의 대표작을 지닌 우리나라 1세대 여성 조경가인 정영선 작가가 영산강 나주 고유의 색과 멋, 역사를 되살리자는 주제로 ‘영산강 정원’으로 연출했다.
작가정원은 전국 공모를 통해 양기삼 작가(2023 경북 호민지 공원조성 제안 우수상)의 ‘강의 기억 나주의 시간’, 김나영(2025 서울식물원 식재설계 공모전 금상)·김현아(2025 청주가드닝페스티벌 정원전시 작가정원 공모전 대상) 공동작가의 ‘Journey of Two Wheels : 두 바퀴의 여정’, 김세희(2024 대한민국 전통조경대전 장려상) 작가의 ‘느러지 가락’, 박영란 작가(전 선우애니메이션 근무)의 ‘흐름속의 정원’으로 남도인의 풍류와 멋, 정취를 담은 서정적인 모습으로 꾸며졌다.
동행정원은 전남산림연구원, 나주시산림조합, 나주시임업후계자협회, ㈜윤토 등 8개의 나주연관 기업과 유관기관에서 정원조성에 참여했다.
시민정원은 전남도 정원관리사 양성교육을 수료한 가드너와 평소 정원분야에 관심이 많은 시민들이 출품한 33점 가운데 전문가 심의를 거쳐 선정된 20점과 참여자들의 다양한 아이디어를 기반해 피크닉가든 형태로 조성됐다.
행사가 집중되는 오는 12일까지는 가족정원체험, 문화공연, 정원산업전, 스탬프투어, 정원문화체험 등 다채로운 프로그램도 운영돼 관람객들의 흥미를 이끌 것으로 기대된다.
또한 행사장 일원에서는 정원페스티벌과 함께 전남의 대표문화예술 축제인 나주영산강축제(8~12일), 나주농업페스타(8~12일), 전국나주마라톤대회(12일)가 열려 지역민과 관광객들에게 흥미로운 볼거리를 제공한다.
김영록 지사는 “나주 영산강 지방정원에서 남도정원의 멋을 세계에 알릴 전라남도 정원페스티벌이 열려 뜻깊다”며 “고 말했다. 이어 “전남은 2023순천만국제정원박람회와 뉴욕문화원의 전남 전통정원 ‘애양단’ 조성 등 정원 분야에서 성공 저력을 갖추고 있다”며 “앞으로도 정원문화산업의 새로운 패러다임을 선도해 나가도록 전남형 정원관광, 2027 남도정원 비엔날레 등 세계적 정원행사를 개최하겠다”고 강조했다.

Jeollanam-do announced the opening of the ‘6th Jeollanam-do Garden Festival’ on October 8th at the Yeongsan River Garden area to promote the excellence of Jeolla gardens and nurture emerging garden artists.
The opening ceremony was attended by approximately 5,000 people, including Governor Kim Young-rok of Jeollanam-do, National Assembly Member Shin Jeong-hoon, Mayor Yoon Byeong-tae of Naju City, Provincial Council Members Choi Myeong-su and Lee Jae-tae, Chairman Lee Jae-nam of the Naju City Council, Director Han Dong-gil of the National Garden Culture Institute, residents, and tourists.
Held under the theme ‘Yeongsan River, Becoming a Garden,’ the festival runs for 22 days until the 29th.
Thirty-three gardens have been created, including one representative garden, four artist gardens, eight district gardens, and twenty citizen gardens. Visitors can fully enjoy the beautiful autumn atmosphere of the South Jeolla gardens alongside the culture of the Yeongsan River, the lifeblood of South Jeolla Province. Each garden is expected to showcase artistic and philosophical value, offering visitors a special experience.
The representative garden, titled ‘Yeongsan River Garden,’ was designed by Jeong Yeong-seon, a first-generation female landscape architect in Korea known for landmark works like Seonyudo Park and Yeouido Saetgang Ecological Park. Her theme revives the unique colors, charm, and history of Naju along the Yeongsan River.
The Artist Garden features works selected through a nationwide competition: ‘Memories of the River, Time of Naju’ by artist Yang Ki-sam (2023 Gyeongbuk Hominjipark Creation Proposal Excellence Award), and 'Journey of Two Wheels: Journey of Two Wheels',
Kim Se-hee's ‘Nureoji Melody’ (2024 Korea Traditional Landscape Design Competition Encouragement Award), and Park Young-ran's ‘Garden in the Flow’ (formerly of Sunwoo Animation). These gardens embody the lyrical spirit, elegance, and charm of the people of the southern region.
Donghaeng Garden was created with participation from eight Naju-related companies and institutions, including the Jeonnam Forest Research Institute, Naju City Forestry Cooperative, Naju City Forestry Successor Association, and Yunto Co., Ltd.
The Citizen Garden was created in the form of a picnic garden, based on the diverse ideas of participants and featuring 20 works selected through expert review from 33 entries submitted by gardeners who completed the Jeollanam-do Garden Manager Training Program and citizens with a keen interest in gardening.
Until the 12th, when events peak, diverse programs like family garden experiences, cultural performances, a garden industry exhibition, a stamp tour, and garden culture experiences will run, expected to draw visitors' interest.
Additionally, alongside the Garden Festival, the Naju Yeongsan River Festival (8th-12th), a representative cultural and arts festival of Jeollanam-do, the Naju Agricultural Festa (8th-12th), and the National Naju Marathon (12th) will be held in the vicinity of the event venue, providing exciting attractions for local residents and tourists.
Governor Kim Young-rok emphasized, “It is meaningful that the Jeollanam-do Garden Festival is being held at the Yeongsan River Regional Garden in Naju to showcase the charm of Namdo gardens to the world,” adding, “We will continue to lead a new paradigm in the garden culture industry by hosting world-class garden events such as Jeollanam-do-style garden tourism and the 2027 Namdo Garden Biennale.”
